The Green Beneath the Ground: Investigating the Effect of a Preparatory Oil Layer on the Adhesion in Paintings on Copper
Supervisor: Dr. Natalia Gustavson
This research investigates adhesion issues in copper paintings from Europe between 1650 and 1750. A green copper carboxylate layer, located between the copper support and ground layer, is often observed. The study aims to explore if this layer is formed by the application of a preparatory linseed oil layer to enhance adhesion. Reconstructions with various linseed oil types were made to assess their impact on paint adhesion and the formation of the green layer.
